Etta James Live
B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, 237 W 42nd St, 8pm.
One of the most blessed singers to ever stand in front of a microphone is playing NYC. Pay attention she came way before Mary J, and can still pull them in. EJ as I like to call her has a voice both brassy and bluesy, and admired by present-day belters.
Deep Space 5 Year Celebration w/DJ Spooky + François K.
Cielo 18 Little W. 12th St., 10pm. Tonight heralds cosmic party Deep Space's fifth anniversary, as well as the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto IV on April 29. What might the latter have to do with the former? Rockstar Games tapped Karl Lagerfeld to act as the "DJ" inside the stolen vehicles in the latest incarnation of the game, for which KL himself curated a couture-worthy selection of his favorite music with a little help from François K. DJ Spooky, that Subliminal Kid, opens the evening.
Ayo Live @ Hiro
Hiro Ballroom, 371 W. 16th St.9th Ave.), 212.727.0212, $12, 8pm.
Parisian-German-Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayo is a folk-soul force to be reckoned with. She pleas for love and the simple things in life. Watch my favorite song.
